Naomi Klein talks Upfront: We are now in Decade Zero.  We are in the midst of a climate emergency. Infrastructure projects for fossil fuels are built to last for forty years – 40 years of delay!

US President Obama: “COP21 is a potential future turning point for the world”. POTENTIAL – the crucial word: The goal to keep temperatures well below 2 Degrees is good! However, the mechanisms agreed will lead us to 3–4 Degrees!

We witness the devastating impacts of de-regulated capitalism around the world; with the current system of “market fundamentalism” we are doomed.

We can’t deal with the problems of climate change within the current system. This has been tried for decades – it failed miserably! If we want to avoid Climate Change we need System Change!

We need something different now. We need a real protest movement. “Street power works”!

What can we do as individuals?

Naomi agrees with Be Specific. Cycle and Walk (where this is possible) and eat healthier food. “We all will be happier and healthier this way!

“I am still flying way too much. I might be called a hypocrite in this context. 10% of the world population are the biggest consumers – I am one of them!”

We need to change our way of living – though policy change is the all-important factor (yes, she means you Politicians!) – We need to make an impact, all of us!

“Our organisation, Climate Revolution, means the same as the title and substance of Naomi Klein’s book, This Changes Everything. It means the very process of changing to a green economy will give us the world we want. We can stop Climate Change by living in harmony with the earth (instead of raping it). This will activate the best in us, bring true human values to the fore. It means that by changing to a green economy we will need to build community and care, fair distribution of wealth, right to life, comfort, culture (not consumption), justice, happiness (give each individual the opportunity to develop), peace – not a war economy. Jobs that benefit the whole world – more teachers, nurses. It could even give us a new religion – love of the earth.” – Vivienne Westwood

In the 2nd part of the programme the UN top official for climate change Christiana Figueres responds to her critic’s claim that the results of COP21 are “worthless and weak”:

“To fix the problem we will need several decades. COP21 leads us towards this pathway. We are getting to the last last minutes to credibly address climate change and I am no one to dispute that.”
