fracking debate london

Once again our audience was disappointed that Cameron’s pro-frackers refused to debate. Jon Snow, therefore tried to raise some of their claims e.g. “energy security,” but it was not possible to have a full argument.

The meeting was really interesting and provided facts which shocked people who are uninformed or confused. It was a meeting of different people, everyone different, just as every person in the world is different; they’re maybe not activists but we’re all engaged in something.

Everyone had their own particular way of seeing things e.g. Andy Hulme, our friend who is a gardener amused everyone with his wit when he talked of the Carlyle Equity Group who have vast amounts of capital to invest in order to fuel their returns: every time something fails – great we can make money. This is what we’re like, let’s keep going – from disaster to collapse. This is what he said:

“Since nobody’s here to express the views of The Carlyle Group I’m going to have a go at conceptualising them :- We have billions and billions of dollars of investment capital. We must obtain a return on that capital. We can do that by fracking. The government is giving us tax breaks and subsidies. We can make money. You talk about damage to the environment. We can fix that. We can make money out of it. If the drinking water is contaminated we can build desalination plants. We can make money out of that. You talk about it getting hotter. No problem.  Have you seen the ski run in Dubai?  We can make money. We can fix the climate. Engineer it. We can put a curtain over the sun. Use Branson’s spaceship.   Make money out of that. Big money.  And you people, if you don’t like it, we’ll get security and we’ll make money out of that too!”

How do we pull together? We must pull together, all the panel said this. John Ashton said we needed the spirit that pulled us through two world wars. Then we need that spirit now, not when the bombs are falling or as it now stands, when the earth is pulling the carpet from under our feet(and we are helping her by drilling under our feet).

At the moment people don’t relate to fracking. How do we pull together? Andreas said, “People can relate to a beautiful dress, all people – men and women, rich and poor.” Perhaps that’s why people trust me. I hope so.
