We are trapped on Earth by our own lies. We have abused our world for so long that we take it for granted that there is no other way to behave. We like things as they are and we learnt to love lies. Lies are good for you – they make you feel better. “I love my new baby and my new trainers and I want to get back to work soon and carry on as normal. I thought things were getting a bit tough but we just sold our house in Chelsea for £10million and bought our house here in Clapham for £1.25million.”

“Don’t you mind that the council evicted a lady who’d lived there for 40 years?” “Well the councils are strapped for cash, they have to do this.” – In the last couple of years the UK government has cut the budgets to councils by half (Austerity).

“Well, I’m really worried about what’s going on in the world. We came home from Paris last night and we were really late. Migrants in the tunnel. I couldn’t help thinking, poor people, though my husband was really cheesed off. But he does worry. He funds really CO2-heavy industry at the bank. He does well. If he didn’t do it, somebody else would. – This is an example of the destruction caused by free market competition. The man is trapped, he can’t self-censor and make good decisions.

Do you know the GAIA theory? I’ll tell you. The originator was scientist James Lovelock, he thought of it in the 1970s. Gaia is the name of the earth goddess and James Lovelock wanted us to get the idea that the earth was alive, that she behaves as if she is alive because she self-regulates, adjusts her temperature in relation to the life forms of her biosphere. The earth has never been so rich in biodiversity and is capable of the most subtle adjustments. Even though she’s nearer to the sun she can maintain her equilibrium. She keeps us cool. But we are polluting and killing and cutting her biodiversity. What can we do? I think it’s so important to talk.”– I agree we have to talk. This lady is near to doing something – save plastic! Go on demonstrations! Perhaps she will be galvanized into this by the lack of engagement of her friend.

“My daughter would love to hear about what you’ve just said. She’s 7, she’s so passionate about wildlife, she wants to save all the animals. I’m very happy with her school.”

These women don’t realize the urgency of the danger we are in because it’s covered by lies. We are the last generation who can stop Climate Change and save the world from mass extinction.

James Lovelock guessed that by the end of this century there would be only 1 billion people left. He thinks we’re too late to stop it because we are too stupid. Scientists all agree we must act now, they are not sure how much time we have and if time has run out.

Lies! We are paralysed by organized lying. – By politicians, working for the central banks and the giant monopolies. The press – that is, the dominant mainstream media, not only repeat the lies but also provide the most effective propaganda of all: non-stop distraction. The biggest lie is that nothing has changed.

It’s terrifying to think that the illusion of reality is the norm; that it has pervaded one’s whole being. We have lived our lives by this propaganda and we have internalized it as the norm. The danger we face is so alien to our view that we cannot accept it. As an activist I feel like an alien talking to people.

How do we activist get through? Before the facts are on us and it is too late – how do we see through the lies? People struggling to lead a normal life in the UK now realize that if George Osborne cuts their income by £1000 they go below the poverty line.

To all those who pretend to know what’s going on but do nothing I say, your knowledge comes from the main stream media and it’s lies; to those who think there is no alternative to our present financial system I say, you are living the lie; and you will die by the lie.

Now what response do I expect to get from people who take these statements as an attack on them? Spirited rejection: I think so, but I beg you to hesitate. I don’t like to be rude but I am desperate to tell the truth. In that moment of hesitation you will realize: One is riddled with lies! There is a truth out there; truth of a better world. And it’s late.

The ones who really do know what’s going on are the thousands of NGO’s and charities. And they are doing a lot! My NGO is Climate Revolution. We are all working to stop the world governments from wrecking the world. So much is happening.

CLIMATE REVOLUTION

First my own NGO, Climate Revolution, which I formed with my friend Cynthia King right after James Lovelock guessed the 1 billion population figure: by calling it Climate Revolution we simply named what was already happening. Throughout the world, in every walk of life people are changing their values. Save a plastic bag and you have already begun to think. We wanted to be a focus for that. And we link with other NGO’s so that we all speak with the same voice.

My fashion and my activism support each other – they are driven by the same motor. “I want a better world.” I say, “Buy less, choose well, make it last.” Quality not quantity. I use my green politics for graphics on clothes and our shows have these themes. I use every opportunity to open my mouth for our activism. We will fuse our fashion website with Climate Revolution.

I try to select, analyse and concentrate the most important information so people can cut through the lies and face the reality. This map is the most important graphic I have ever done and the list of bullet points which describe the global financial system is the most important analysis.

The Rotten Financial System

Cynthia does lots of groundwork with other NGO’s. Meetings; at the moment towards a demonstration – should be huge – on 29th of November in London. She thought of the title People’s March for Climate, Justice and Jobs. I interpret this title as “We want a green economy with jobs for everyone”: Climate Justice – that can only happen in a green economy and a truly green economy would have a job for everyone who wanted one because there would be a fair distribution of wealth and fair pay with real values e.g. more teachers, nurses, farmers; better poets, true judges of art.

what's good for the planetWhats good for people is good for the planet

This march will be very much against austerity and also massive opposition to TTIP. TTIP is so bad, so inhuman.

I spoke at a rally against TTIP, I was in Shock. How come we’re only just coming to understand what’s going on? These trade agreements – NAFTA for example, which make use of Investment and State Dispute Settlement (ISDS).

Politicians – We have got to call them CRIMINALS (roars of approval) I think they’re proud of being criminals; every one of their policies is a CRIME against humanity. Absolute proof: They want to sign TTIP. They think it’s fine that TTIP lets the GIANTS (monopolies) wreck your country and poison the water.
“Oh no! We now have control of your country. If you stop us our secret courts will fine you $1 bn.  Don’t worry, we’ll sell you some clean water in plastic bottles.”
I never thought these CRIMINALS would have the effrontery to show their hand so clearly: They are pro profit – and anti-people.
TTIP is a CRIME, Fracking, Austerity, Climate Change, Killing Bees are CRIMES.

When I got home I began to think of the CRIMINALS as playing a game together with the monopolies and the banks – the revolving door. The monopolies are the GIANTS and the central banks are the FACELESS EVIL. We are Faust. We have sold our soul, not for power, but for nothing – we’ve been tricked by the JOKER. And who is the Joker? He’s Mephistopheles, the Entertainer, the Distractor, the Illusionist, the Liar: the mainstream media, the press. I think Marlowe’s play, Dr Faustus, could be reworked.

Cindy and Teddy also work on Climate Revolution. Cindy is also working on the march. She works with young focus groups and students, people who will rally and demonstrate. We work with 350.org on this. We want to stimulate a coming together of intellectuals.

Teddy works particularly to make sure stuff gets on our website. Our computer man Joe is the best.

The march is timed for the beginning of COP21 in Paris. Like I said, so much is happening, so much is coming together.

My friend Pamela Anderson helps me a lot. She made sure that Paul Watson of Sea Shepherd came to our fashion show in Paris. He has political asylum there and finally I met him. He was co-founder of Greenpeace. Sea Shepherd has more ships and is successful in preventing illegal shipping and protecting endangered species. In the last two years they have saved 6,000 whales.

Sea Shepherd

The first thing I asked Paul was, “Is there a chance to save the world?” He said, no we are not too late. We must regenerate the seas. The seas give us 80% of everything we need; oxygen, waste disposal, it sequesters 80% CO2.

I always thought big fish eat little fish, so we start with bacteria and plankton and krill. Paul says, no, it’s a cycle. It’s the whales’ shit and not only that these huge creatures bring up the iron and nitrogen from the bottom of the sea. The more predators in the sea, the more fish you get. Every creature on this earth gives and takes – this is biodiversity – except us. We only take. At the moment the world biodiversity can only deal with 50% of our poison and waste.

He gave me his short manual on how to save the world. Each page was a set of bullet points to identify a particular problem and suggestions of how to solve it: nothing vague, just a practical programme. It is the best tool every activist has been waiting for. An example from one page:

He is expecting a life size replica of the blue whale down on the quay of the Seine for the COP21 in Paris, beginning of December.

I will join Paul there and hopefully take part in the COP21 mobilization campaign launched by Nicolas Hulot called Head of State, DARE.

I pick out three of it’s essential propositions to show that we are talking concrete implementation. It begins, “We the citizens of the world call on the politicians at the heads of the richest and highest greenhouse gas emitting countries to finally rise to the challenge of climate change.

  1. Regulate finance at long last.
  2. Put an end to abuses by multinationals (obviously completely against TTIP)
  3. Clean up public spending / stop the investment in fossil fuels.

I am involved with Trillion Fund, a company set up to fund renewable energy products. What also interests me is the crowd funding aspect, which I hope will lead to a change in the financial system.

The proposed 87% reduction in government support to the Feed in Tariff (FiT), whilst maintaining subsidies to fossil fuels, cuts out crowd investors and community projects (the people Trillion Fund was built for!). Investor confidence is low and prospects for future renewable energy projects is very uncertain.

As Jacquie McGlade (the UN’s chief environment scientist) pointed out, these cuts are too deep and too quick for any but the biggest sites and biggest investors in renewables to survive.

So we’re fighting the government on this.

  1. We are enmeshed in our own lies, educated to ignore and bullied to lie. Thank you for this most pertinent article.
