  1. This is a letter we received from Elise who you’ve read about in ‘The Latest’, along with the photo of the collage she mentions below. What a brave girl – and only 9 years old!

    Hi Vivienne,

Just wanted to say that I was amazed when I saw my badge design on all the invitations and fashion show paperwork on Sunday, everyone I have told and shown can hardly believe it, I think it was brilliant that you used it; I hope some of the guests looked at it and it made them think about the message. Thank you.

I have been really busy trying to get everyone to listen to me about the rain forest, which I have to say is quite difficult because everyone is always so busy, this is what I have done so far:

I have stood up in class and given the talk I have written about Cool Earth and the rain forest and my Head Teacher has put up my collage in the hall, she has also said I can put a sentence in the weekly newsletter about Cool Earth.

What I would really like to do now is stand up in front of my whole school and do my talk to everyone, I think the children would be interested as it is about orangutans, rain forest, palm oil and Cool Earth, it’s about how trees are getting cut down so quickly they don’t have a chance to regrow.

Standing up and speaking is something I am shy about, I usually try not to get any speaking parts in school assemblies, but I really want to stand up and talk to everyone so maybe they will care too.

I haven’t given up yet and I am going to ask again if I can do my talk in an assembly soon.

At school on Thursday it is World Book Day and I am going as the Gruffalo, I am taking in the story that I have written and I am going to hand out copies to the other classes, it is in the same style as the book, it’s starts off like this.

The Gruffalo ONCE lived in the Deep Dark wood,
But the wood got cut down and this was NOT good.

I will send you a copy of my talk and my story soon.

    Hope you are ok.

    Love Eco Elise xx

  2. And here is a another great letter, this time from Abigail:

    Hello Vivienne,

I’d like to thank you for inviting Elise and I to the Red Label show last Sunday it was a once in a life time experience.

The following Monday when I went back to school I went straight to my Head of year and asked her if I could do an assembly on Cool Earth and your work.
I had already introduced the idea of a design an Eco-friendly bag competition to my Art department (I took in the Christmas card to show them what you were doing) It costs £3 to enter, so far 5 students have entered and I am hoping to get more kids involved as I have been told that any money raised I can send to Cool Earth.

This Friday I am doing an assembly and 2 lessons about you and Cool Earth! I am also involving all my friends in this mission to raise awareness of the felling of the rain forest.

It is really quite difficult to get every ones attention about this issue, but I will try my best to make it interesting.

Sadly this morning we saw our neighbours beautiful silver birch tree being cut down, I felt so upset because lots of the birds I watch nest, roost and feed in that tree, I was keeping a record of all the different birds that come into our area over the winter time, this tree was grew for attracting the birds.
We couldn’t do anything about it because it wasn’t on our land.

I am a member of the RSPB and they are doing a save the Rain forest campaign maybe you could do something together?

I will keep in touch with you if anything more happens with the school.

    Take care

    Abigail

  3. Wow, Elise, you are amazing! It is hard to make people stop and listen. I have had the same problems too, but slowly they are starting to take notice. We now have a big Cool Earth Display in our Geography class and my friends have started buying trees instead of birthday cards for friends. I am a bit older than you, but still people don’t really believe what you tell them. I emailed Cool Earth and they were great and sent me some posters for school. My little brother Ted, is 10 and he has taken one to school too and he is hoping to have a cake bake to raise some money for Cool Earth. His teacher has said that they are going to sign up the School with the Cool Earth site and hopefully sponsor an acre of rainforest! We are doing that in our class too. I have a spare poster if you wanted me to send it to you. I also really liked the start of your changed Gruffalo story, it was cool. We have to keep trying to get people to listen, it is our future that depends on all this. I hope you have a good week and that you enjoy World Book Day. I am looking forward to reading the rest of your story. Perhaps you could let me have a copy so we could hand it out to other children too!?? George xx

  4. Hi George

Sounds like you and Ted are doing a pretty good job, it is really difficult to get people to listen but I will keep trying.
Cool Earth have emailed me, they have been brilliant, thank you for your poster offer that was kind but Cool Earth have sent me some posters as well, I am going to take one into school , I liked Teds plan to have a cake bake think I might try that as well.
Glad you liked the sound of my story, I will be sending a copy to Vivienne soon so hopefully you can see it then.
Good luck with everything you are doing it’s great to know other kids care .
    Bye
    Eco Elise
