After 5 years as Chief Inspector of Prisons Nick Hardwick has decided to stop. He is leaving because he did not want to become desensitised. Prison is awful; even he who was free to leave felt locked in – just the noises and the smell and the dirt. People who shouldn’t be there, self-harm and suicide, the need for smaller units and more specialized care.

Children: a little boy asked him, “Can you help me?” “What can I do for you?” “I want to go home to my mummy.”

Asylum seekers locked up.
