Effectively, this Petition represents the last chance in Leonard Peltier’s lifetime.
Over many years Vivienne has been engaged campaigning for Leonard Peltier, a member of the Lakota tribe who was convicted of murdering two FBI agents in 1977 despite serious concerns about the fairness of proceedings leading to his conviction.
For many Leonard became a symbol of the mistreatment of Native Americans by the US criminal justice system, others think he should continue to pay his debt to society for the alleged crime he committed.
Leonard has now spent 40 of his 71 years in federal prison. His health has been declining rapidly. Martin Garbus, Leonard’s attorney says: “Forty years is enough; Leonard Peltier has exhausted all appeals and is next eligible to apply for parole in 2024, in the unlikely event that he lives that long”.
Garbus’ renewed efforts to win freedom for Leonard by filing a formal appeal for clemency to the Department of Justice and requesting that President Barack Obama intervene on Peltier’s behalf is effectively Leonard’s last chance.
